DMtools: Frumble Fumble

Updated: Jul 22, 2023

Back in the day when I ran AD&D I also played in the wondrous world of MERP. I still have some great memories from that time such as the attack on Buhr Dera as shown on the picture, it was a huge battlefield. It took us several sessions to complete.

The Battle at Buhr Dera

But what I will never forget, neither will anyone who played this setting, is the gruesome critical hit and fumble tables. So DEADLY!

When I finally converted to Dnd 3.5, I missed the deadliness in the game and found it unfair that my players couldn't enjoy the blessings of a massive fumble *evil chuckle.

I started converting the MERP tables to Dnd, which was a never-ending process of adjustments and to this day it is not really finished. We are playing Pathfinder 2E and they have their own crit and fumble tables, so I thought I'd share my work with the league community.

Ruleset:

dnd 3.5

Fumble roll:

When you roll a natural 1 you roll on the fumble table AND always lose all actions in that round.

Fumble effect limits : To make certain some players do not get immediate gruesome effects and get used to the table, I limited the roll by level. This means the higher level you are the more dangerous your fumble rolls can be *another evil chuckle.

If you roll over the maximum of your limit you get the highest result within your limit.

Lvl Critical effect limit

1-5 Minor

6-12 Moderate

13+ Heavy

Fumble effects table:

For your convenience I have added the table in the attachment. Have fun with them and feel free to comment if you have questions.
