"In the chaos of the moment, find your rhythm and dance with the madness. That's where true freedom lies." - A devout follower of Olidammara

Olidammara (oh-lih-dam-MAH-rah) (reference to armadillo if spelled backwards), the likeable scoundrel, the bard of the gods, but more in the spirit of an adventurous bard who revels in life's pleasures with a cunning twist. He loves revelry and believes that you should reach out and grab life with both bands, that a life without fun isn’t worth living, and gold does more good when it's spent than when it’s hoarded. Ever-shifting in form and gifted with strange magic, he allows himself to be understood only long enough for you to feel at ease—then upends everything and delights in the chaos that follows. Beloved by the common folk, beggars, and jesters alike, he is also revered by adventuring bards, rogues, and those who embrace life to its fullest. He embodies a free spirit unbound by convention, always pursuing the finer things in life with irreverent delight.
Origin
Olidammara is one of the few deities without a clear origin story. Perhaps he was present when the Aetheric deities banished Tharizdun, perhaps he appeared when the first animals ran free and showed joy. Most is shrouded in mystery.
Today he is openly claimed by both the Flannae and Oeirid cultures, but Olidammara is a deity from the early beginnings of civilisation, and probably older than most deities. He's associated with entertainment and the pleasures of life, he captivated early mortals with his infectious charm and zest for celebration. As mortals sought respite from the rigors of existence, they turned to him, fostering a growing following that propelled him to prominence within the pantheon.
Embracing the ever-evolving tapestry of mortal cultures and expressions of joy, the Laughing Rogue expanded his domain beyond mere revelry to include trickery, wit, and liberation from societal constraints. Through his cunning schemes and whimsical exploits, he endeared himself to mortals and fellow deities alike, weaving tales of mischief and merriment. With each prank and jest, his influence grew, solidifying his position as a deity whose legacy is eternally intertwined with the boundless spirit of revelry and the pursuit of freedom.
Appearance
Olidammara’s natural appearance is a young man of medium height, with a slender build, olive skin, merry green eyes, chestnut hair, and a dashing beard. He typically wears high leather buskins (calf-high or knee-high boot ), cloth pants, a leather vest, and an ornate ring. In addition, he has a magic mask that lets him change his appearance and often disguises himself to look like a tinker or peddler, a fop, a young mercenary, or a fat merchant—but rarely anyone who is old.
Green and gold are his favourite colours, and he likes to use one or both of these tones even when disguised. When using his natural appearance or when in a suitable disguise he carries a musical instrument but most often a a lute or the kanteel capable of an amazing variety of sounds and magics. With this artifact he has charmed talismans from demons, built majestic palaces, and conjured bizarre illusions to please crowds of thousands.
His infamous rapier swings on his belt, although at any time he may be carrying just about any weapon common to a swashbuckler type. He epitomizes the mysterious stranger, the noble thief and the witty hero.
Relations with other Faiths
Olidammara is a friendly being and holds no grudges against other deities, despite past conflicts where he was caught in the act. As an ages-old but young-feeling god, he knows that things change over time, and anger often cools to form fond memories, just as an annoying song sticks in the mind until it becomes a favourite. Because of this, he is sometimes used as a go-between for rival deities not on speaking terms, although he is always fighting the temptation to fiddle with the message before he delivers it.
Olidammara gets along well with wandering deities such as Fharlanghn and the forest goddess Ehlonna/ Ehlenestra with whom be shares a love of unspoiled places. His favourite deity is the Oeridian goddess of Chance, Good Luck, and Skill - Rudd (Bissel born human (oeridian and suel blood) woman (perhaps in -400 CY)), who ascended to divinity (around -150CY) with the help of the laughing Rogue. A perfect companion to Olidammara. He is also on very good terms with Myhriss, the Flan goddess of Love, Romance, and Beauty, and the stories say he often keeps her company.
Even lawful deities like Heironeous and Hextor, who he often jokes about, tolerate him even when they resent his pranks, because he can be so charming. Even Zagyg likes him despite their past run-ins, enjoying Olidammara's embracing of chaos, laughing all the harder when he himself is the target.
The only deities he actually avoids socially are overtly evil and destructive ones whose malevolence is jarring to him despite many overtures of friendship in the past centuries or millennia. Now he contents himself with teasing them gently and in non-damaging ways, such as replacing a high cleric’s ceremonial bone staff with a rain stick, painting all of a temple’s undead guardians pink, or programming illusions to play rowdy tavern music in the middle of a sombre ceremony.
Teachings
As the patron of thieves and beggars, his teachings veer away from petty theft or exploitation of the poor, instead advocating for wealth acquisition from those who can afford the loss. His philosophy often embodies the notion of "robbing the rich, hosting a grand celebration, and invite the less fortunate." However, he perceives efforts to thwart thievery as a challenge to his skills, occasionally leading him into troublesome situations.
In his capacity as a god of music, Olidammara is the favourite of bards, although overall he prefers music enjoyed by the common folk over formalized tunes used for court occasions. He teaches that one must invoke revelry, be quick with a joke and minor magical tricks, taking delight in entertaining others, be it a child or a charming barmaid.
Renowned as the Laughing Rogue, the God of Wine and other fruity spirits, he emphasizes that one must enjoy and appreciate the finished product over its production. Nevertheless, he encourages the faithful to maintain an appreciation for nature's gifts, revelling in light music and storytelling in serene woodlands as much as in bustling city slums.
At the heart of Olidammara's teachings lies a fervent belief that life is meant to be savoured and enjoyed fully, for a life of misery and boredom is a life wasted. Mortals should laugh, enjoy the company of friends and the playing of music, taste good food, and drink good wine. He exhorts his followers to treat music as a sacred art, to embrace humour and laughter even in challenging times, and to avoid misery, temperance, and solemnity, which he deems as toxic to the soul. Furthermore, he encourages occasional mischief not for its own sake, but to add excitement to boring lives and rattle the self-built cages of materialists.
Symbol
True to his chaotic nature, the god of revelry and trickery has many important symbols. Different groups of worshippers might well have different holy symbols and they may not even be recognized by all of them. Here are a few of his symbols.
The Mask A stylized mask or a theatrical half-mask, often adorned with motifs of jesters, grapes, or wine goblets. One half has a crazed laughing face and the other a more open laughing face. It represents the need to not take life too seriously and clearly symbolizes the dual nature of Olidammara - the trickster and the reveller.
The kanteel This represents the music and revelry he spreads in the world, and in some places a simple sketch of it indicates a safe house or place of rest for followers on the run.
A Wine Goblet Symbolizing the deity's indulgent and joyful nature and is common symbol for those who sometimes pay hommage to him.
A Ring A magical looking ring of fluid design, symbolising the god's own great ring of protection, within the design of the ring one can spot a goblet, musical element or grapes, or any other element that is attached to his faith. Many of his faith purchase or otherwise acquire magical rings as symbols of their faith.
The Number 9 This number is seen as a lucky or protective number and stems from a tale of the deity's imprisonment by Zagig. In some cases the kantele symbol and the number 9 are combined, for example a 9-rune with strings or a kantele that looks much like a 9-rune, clerics prefer nine-sided summoning diagrams, and so on. A few odd individuals even count themselves lucky if they lose a finger on some caper, leaving them with only nine fingers, drawing a parallel between themselves and the god.
No matter the chosen holy symbol, they always carry a dynamic and fluid design. They may incorporate swirling patterns, asymmetrical shapes, or playful curves, emphasizing movement and spontaneity.
Place of worship
(Temple)
Temples dedicated to Olidammara reflect the whimsical and unpredictable nature of the deity himself. They are found in bustling cities, lively marketplaces, and a handful are hidden within the depths of forests where revelry and merriment thrive.
The temples in urban settings are inns, taverns, theaters, or other establishments known for entertainment and social gatherings. While some are designed to have many shadowy areas and focus on his more illicit aspects, others are well-lit like a feasting hall or designed to enhance musical performances such as a theater. From the outside, they may appear like any other building lining the streets, but upon closer inspection or through word of mouth, adventurers may discover their true nature. One thing is true for all temples, they hold little of value as the faithful believe that wealth is better spent than hoarded.
Shrines to 'The Merry-Eyed Trickster' are far more common than temples and may be found in either an urban or rural setting. These Shrines could be a pile of stones, or an outdoor alcove bearing his mark where worshipers can pour an offering of wine or leave a bit of tasty food and a few copper coins. It is not considered an affront to the god for someone truly poor to take these coins, although stories exist of misers being punished for daring to take what is not their due. Because most of his clergy is mobile, they tend to stop at these places, make prayers and blessings, and clean up the site if necessary.
Some shrines are in hidden glades, secluded sanctuaries that offer a retreat from the bustle of city life, providing a tranquil environment for meditation, reflection, and revelry. Followers may construct makeshift shrines adorned with colourful ribbons, masks, and other symbols of the deity amidst the trees and foliage.
(Service)
The temple regularly hosts celebratory rituals and festivals to honour Olidammara. These events often involve music, dancing, feasting, and performances of all kinds. Whether it’s a raucous street parade, a comedic play, or a grand masquerade ball, followers gather to revel in the joyous spirit of the deity. The temple bursts with vibrant colour and lively chaos, adorned with banners of red and gold. The air is thick with the scents of spiced wine, roasted meats, and incense, mingling with the sound of laughter and lively music played on lutes, pipes, and drums.
A beloved tradition is the "Song of the Mask," where worshippers don intricately decorated masks and perform improvisational songs and dances. The masks, symbolizing Olidammara’s many guises, are later hung on the temple walls as offerings. Another highlight is spontaneous storytelling contests, where participants weave outrageous tales for the crowd’s amusement.
Playful mischief is a hallmark of Olidammara’s worship, and lighthearted pranks are often staged during gatherings. Harmless tricks, like swapping a reveller’s goblet with sparkling cider or slipping oversized hats onto unsuspecting guests, are considered acts of devotion. These antics add to the carefree and exuberant atmosphere, reminding all to embrace life’s pleasures with wit and humour.
Devout followers make offerings of wine, coins, trinkets, or other symbolic items. The temple provides sacred spaces where worshippers can offer prayers, light candles, or leave items in reverence to Olidammara.

They are subjected to a series of playful trials that test their wit, cunning, and ability to think on their feet, offering opportunities for growth and amusement in the realm that is a dynamic and ever-changing landscape where nothing is as it seems. Aphorisms
The everyday sayings and adages of the faithful tell a great deal about their beliefs and morals.
A cage of gold, is still a cageA man surrounded by valuable things might think he is happy, but if he cannot leave his home for fear of his possessions being stolen, and cannot touch them for fear they might break, he is not actually happy. Take the man’s things so he is no longer bound to them and can be free to live as nature intended.
Hoarded gold, Is no treasureA man who lives alone with all of his money in a vault is poorer than a penniless man surrounded by merriment. What is the point of money and fine things if you cannot use them to bring you happiness? Better to spend your gold on food, wine, and music than let your mouth, ears, and mind go numb from nothingness.
One hand in the trap, one hand on the bottleThis is used to celebrate the specific adventurous and often chaotic lifestyle of one who is, or should become, a follower of the laughing rogue. It's the acceptance that a life of true freedom and joy is messy, and a good trickster doesn't just endure the consequences — they celebrate them with a drink and a laugh. Often during the action itself.
Relics
As with most worldly possessions, relics in the hands of Olidammara’s faithful tend to pass around a great deal. Any of the following items might end up in the hands of those devoted to the Laughing Rogue.
Kanteel of the Oldest: Olidammara occasionally lends this relic to mortals or allows it to be stolen for a time. The kanteel will significantly boost anyone's performance attempts if they are skilled enough in the first place. In the hands of a skilled user, it is rumoured to produce several magical effects such as rally a whole army or suppress a rebellion. Olidammara can call the kanteel to his person at any time, even across planar barriers.
Mask of Imontilo: This theatre mask is white with black jewels around the eyes and a goatee-like formation of precious stones under the mouth. Created by and named for a clever cleric of Olidammara, the mask magically disguises the wearer and allows special vision capabilities. Scripture says it can be commanded to charm anyone and it was with these powers that Imontilo charmed his way into the beds and treasure troves of dozens of nobles. In the decades since Imontilo’s disappearance the item has appeared in different hands. Rumour has it the mask is now cursed, causing the sought-after prize to fall from the wearer’s hands at the last minute and leaving only a hollow victory.
Spying Eye of Olidammara: This platinum ring is engraved with the mask-symbol of the Laughing Rogue Banked by a wine bottle on either side and protects its bearer from attacks, falling and even improve athletic skills such as climbing and jumping. Scripture writes that one could command the ring to scry on someone or something. The ring actually began as a luxury item for Vax the Valorous, an adventurer turned bandit turned innkeeper, who wanted easy access to the comforts of life. For stories are told that any liquid drunk with the hand wearing the ring tastes like fine wine and any food eaten with that hand (whether directly or with a utensil) tastes excellent. Allowing the wearer to drink foul water and eat spoiled meat.
