GLP Online Gaming Code

  • 3 min read

Streaming is a public affair and there have been instances on other streams, on occasion, where things went wrong because people didn’t think things through. The ‘code’ below is mostly just common sense when playing online with strangers or friends. I mention them, so it is clear to everyone involved. Do not hesitate to talk to me if you have any questions concerning a rule.

Safety tools

Role-playing and story games offer a unique opportunity for creativity and collaboration. However, the improvisational nature of these games exposes players to the risk of discomfort and emotional distress. Everyone has different boundaries and it’s impossible to know what will be upsetting to a fellow gamer. Best practices and safety tools are an important part of tabletop role-playing because they allow clear communication about what is, and what is not okay for everyone at the table.

  • Check the campaign infosheet to know what to expect from the adventure(s).

  • Let your GM know what topics are a problem and which safety tools you would like in place.

Diplomatic side of things

  • Expectation of availability, which means that you try to attend every session, and when you cannot, that you provide as much notice as possible. The GM promises to do the same.

  • Although in play, themes such a slavery, politics and racism can be a story topic, do NOT discriminate or be racist on the stream nor discuss real life politics, faiths or role model stereotypes.

  • Do not let disagreements escalate nor bring personal conflicts to the table but work it out before or after the stream and inform the DM. If needed, ask for a 'game break' to discuss it before moving on with the game.

  • Respect the choices of the other players even when they do things you wouldn’t do. Do not try to change their actions.

  • Keep cursing to a minimum as it is not common language use in all countries.

  • General courtesy, common sense and RESPECT are key in everything.

  • Also, do not smoke/ vape during the stream nor be drunk or fall asleep (if you are too tired then cancel your seat at the table).

Camera, Sound ... Action

Respect everyone's time by being tech ready for the game.

🎦  Camera:

  • To be able to participate you will need to be okay with your gorgeous face being visible and clear to all.

  • Make sure the lighting on your face is adequate.

  • Be aware of what is showing in your background.

  • The GM may offer a set of virtually backgrounds that fit the campaign if you want to use that.

🔊  Sound

  • Sound is something that needs to be good or all roleplay will suffer for it. It is far more important than video feed.

  • We will do pre-sound checks every time.

  • If needed, invest in a better sound setup to make sure other players are hearing you clearly.

🛜  Internet:

  • A solid internet connection is also vitally important. The internet cable (utp) is king!! Do not trust your wi-fi signal as foundry and video use a lot of data.

🎲Foundry

  • We will use Foundry VTT for our game.

  • Find the link to the video 'Basics for players' to familiarise yourself with the easy to use system.

  • You do not need to buy anything; I will provide an access link. I advise you to use Google Chrome. Foundry also often works smoother when your browser has Hardware acceleration turned on.

🗣️Discord

  • We use Discord (free) for non-streamed games

  • We use VDO Ninja for communication in streamed games

  • If you need help setting that up, let us know

Me distracted?

📵  Avoid distractions:

  • Avoid the use of your phone during the game (secret msg is done in Foundry).

  • Do not be distracted by your own surroundings and be present during the game, especially in combat.

  • It is vital you are always following along and know what you want to do when it is your turn. Let’s keep the waiting time down as much as possible.

  • Being involved and immersed will speed up the game, allow tension to build up and in the end give you more fun.

😴  Short rest:

  • Be fit and well rested before the stream starts, falling asleep is a definite ‘nono’, let the GM know beforehand that you are tired, and we’ll work around it.
